Top Notch odds a strong fancy among 2017 Peterborough Chase tips
Cheltenham Bet’s 2017 Peterborough Chase tips for the rearranged Grade 2 contest at Taunton say Top Notch odds are impossible to oppose.
Top Notch looks a worthy favourite to provide champion trainer Nicky Henderson with a sixth winner of the rescheduled Grade 2 Peterborough Chase at Taunton on Thursday (14:45).
This six-year-old has never finished outside the first three in eight career starts over fences.
His best form includes a five-length victory in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown.
Impressive performance at Ascot
Top Notch went on to be a length runner-up to Yorkhill in the JLT Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Although he was then third in back-to-back races at Aintree, the latter was a spin over hurdles on reappearance.
That put Top Notch right for a crack at the Grade 2 1965 Chase at Ascot, which he impressively landed by eight lengths over a similar 2m 5f trip.
It was a taking display in a far more competitive contest than this.
Nothing to fear from Josses Hill
The selection had re-opposing stablemate and last year’s Peterborough winner, Josses Hill, trailing in a massive 59 lengths behind in sixth.
Despite the change in venue from regular race home Huntingdon, Top Notch has nothing to fear from his fellow Henderson inmate and the betting agrees.
They race off level weights here despite Josses Hill being rated 10lb inferior to Top Notch.
Ptit Zig an intriguing contender
Paul Nicholls sends Ptit Zig back over fences in this year’s renewal after falling in the 2015 race.
The eight-year-old won his first four chases in 2014/15, including when slamming Josses Hill by nine lengths in a Grade 2 at Ascot.
Ptit Zig also landed two further outings at this level over fences at Cheltenham and Down Royal on reappearance in 2015/16.
Switch back from hurdles interesting
After coming to grief when looking beaten at the last two years ago and then unseating in a Listed affair at Kempton, connections switched him back to hurdles.
Although landing the 2016 French Champion Hurdle at Auteuil, that is the only highlight of his 3m hurdling career.
If cutting out the costly mistakes of his last runs over fences and turning up in his 2014 form, then Ptit Zig could make the frame as Vaniteux has been poor since joining David Pipe and course winner Max Ward has plenty to find on official ratings.
