King’s Odyssey odds appeal among 2017 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup tips
Cheltenham Bet’s 2017 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup tips say back King’s Odyssey odds for the 2m 5f Grade 3 handicap, while Ballyalton bets also appeal.
King’s Odyssey has become well-treated, so looks to have plenty going for him in the feature race at Cheltenham on Saturday, the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup Handicap Chase (13:55).
This Evan Williams trained eight-year-old opened his account over the larger obstacles at the second time of asking when easily beating Southfield Vic by 3 1/4 lengths on soft ground at Wincanton.
He was allotted and opening mark of 139 on the back of that success.
The selection showed a good attitude to dig deep and follow-up over course and distance, finding plenty when pressed to fend off Waldorf Salad by 1 3/4 lengths on bottomless ground.
Given a chance by assessor
King’s Odyssey was also in the process of running a huge race in this 12 months ago off a rating of 147 when coming to grief at the 12th.
He was travelling well, tracking the leading pair and yet to be asked a a serious question when disaster struck.
King’s Odyssey is now able to race off 7lb lower, so that gives him major claims from a handicapping perspective on the pick of his form.
Promising prep run
The likely testing conditions will also hold no fears and he comes into the race having shaped nicely on seasonal reappearance when a two-length third at Carlisle.
That should have out him spot on for this assignment.
So, with the stable in decent nick, King’s Odyssey odds look decent value to land the spoils.
Ballyalton bets feared most
Ian Williams, meanwhile, saddles Ballyalton and he may well prove the biggest danger to the selection.
The 10-year-old enjoyed his finest hour when beating Bouvreuil by half-a-length in the Listed 20-runner Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival off a mark of 140.
He is able to race in this off just 3lb higher, having run well last time out when a 6 1/2 lengths fourth of 17 to the re-opposing Splash Of Ginge in the Betvictor Gold Cup at this venue.
Ballyalton now meets the winner on 5lb better terms, so that may well be enough to see him reverse the placings at a track which clearly plays to his strengths.
